Learning Goals
Student learning goals include:
To provide the student with a knowledge of the historical development of law and the philosophy of law.
To familiarize the student with the United States Constitution and to integrate constitutional provisions with the fundamentals of law.
To introduce the student to basic legal definitions and concepts which provide a foundation for law.
To develop within the student an appreciation for the value of case study and legal research as a means of interpreting court decisions in relation to the written statutes.
To familiarize the student with the relationship between the law and the total Administration of Justice.
To explore the relationship between certain statutory crimes and the legal foundation(s) on which they are based.
Course Content:
This course will cover 6 basic, fundamental criminal law disciplines or areas of focus:
Basic Concepts of Criminal law
Balancing Constitutional Rights with the need for public order
Crimes against Persons
Crimes against Property
Sex Crimes
Other Criminal Conduct--Drugs, gangs etc.
This course meets the C.O.S. ADJ program AA Degree requirements and also UC/CSU transfer requirements.
