This course is a survey of the equine industry. Throughout the duration of the semester, we will be discussing the various aspects of breeds and breeding practices, equine selection and evaluation, nutrition, disease control, equipment, facilities, business aspects, exercise and training principles.

Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. Review common horse diseases and parasites and their control.
2. Evaluate and select horses by analysis and performance information.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of horse reproduction as it pertains to sound management.
4. Identify a minimum of eight common breeds of horses and assess their differences.
5. Design a horse handling facilities with cost analysis of preparation for marketing of equine.
6. Illustrate proper handling methods, exercise programs and compare various training techniques.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of basic health care and equine nutrition.
8. Evaluate the various types of equipment used in the equine industry and understand the relevance of each item.
9. Identify cultural contributions and ethnic influences on the horse industry.
10. Describe career opportunities and requirements for successful employment.

Required texts:

Equine Science 3rd edition, Rick Parker, Delmar Cengage Learning, 2007.
In addition to obtaining the textbook from the campus bookstore, it may be possible to locate used textbooks online. Make sure to order the correct version and that the books will arrive no later than July 6th.
