The purpose of a Foundation grant is to offer wider monetary support for innovative educational opportunities at College of the Siskiyous.  The Foundation Grants provide incentive to support, even experimental activities, that advance the College's mission.  The Foundation seeks to otherwise increase involvement in interdisciplinary learning opportunities for faculty and staff and support the planning agenda of the Institution.

It is expected that the proposals will:

  • Enhance the College's ability to strengthen its programs and services.

  • Support the faculty and staff development within a learning community environment.

  • Support the use of technology for enhancing the educational opportunities of students, staff and faculty.

Grant proposals may be developed and submitted by individuals or campus units and are limited to a one page narrative and must address the following points:

  • Indicate how the request fits into department's goals and plans or those of the College as a whole.

  • Include a letter of support from the appropriate Vice President.

  • List who will benefit from the grant and how they will benefit.

  • List objectives and how they will be measured.

  • Provide a projected time line and budget including costs over the requested amount.

FACULTY/STAFF EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR 1998-1999

The following faculty/staff grants were funded by the COS Foundation in 1998-1999:

 1.      $913 - Preserving Our Heritage:  The developed copies of a CD containing electronic images of historical Siskiyou County photographs, documents, and artifacts obtained with the cooperation of local museums and libraries.  The CD was distributed to all participating Siskiyou County museums, and the COS Mount Shasta Collection.

 2.      $1,000 - Replacing the COS Theatre’s Grand Drape:   This grant replaced the original grand drape, which was installed in the theatre in 1969 and was well beyond repair.  The Foundation funded $1,000,  with a challenge to the theatre department to match the grant.  The match was met..

 3.      $438 - Desktop Videoconferencing Equipment:  This grant requested desktop videoconferencing equipment at the Weed and Yreka Campuses, as well as the Happy Camp Computer Center to allow videoconferencing over the local area network or the Internet.  It is used for distant student applications, instructor office hours, advising and interviewing and other student service interactions.

 4.      $400 - Santa Claus Suit and Beard:  This grant supported the  purchase a Santa Claus suit for the College’s annual Children’s Christmas party.  Up to 200 disadvantaged children are annually hosted at the party and benefit from the Christmas celebration which is supported by COS staff and local community businesses and residents.

 5.      $500 - Support for Brochure Printing: This grant supported the printing of music programs for the Community Choir’s Tour of Italy in the Summer of 1999.  While on tour, the choir sang in churches and the Vatican.  Programs were distributed wherever the Choir performed.

 

FACULTY/STAFF EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR 1999-2000

The following faculty/staff grants were funded by the COS Foundation in 1999-2000:

1.       $1000 - Preserving Our Heritage:  The grant created multiple CDs containing electronic images of historical Siskiyou County photographs, documents, and artifacts obtained with the cooperation of local museums and libraries. The CDs were distributed to all participating Siskiyou County museums, the COS Mount Shasta Collection, all elementary, high school and college history teachers.

2.       $1000 - Travel Funds to COS Honor Society, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Members:  The grant enabled one PTK member to attend the Regional PTK Leadership Conference in Reno, Nevada, and two members to attend the International PTK Convention in Orlando, Florida. Students gained a much broader perspective of PTK national projects, such as “America Reads Challenge” or “Eddie Eagle Gun Safety for Children” which benefits all PTK members and children within our community.

3.       $960 - Performing Arts Tickets for Six Elementary and High Schools:  The grant provided tickets to COS Performing Art Series performances for K-12th grade students. Teachers participating in the Eisenhower Arts Project have received training in lesson planning for the arts and incorporate teaching material and art projects into their classrooms. The performances provided culture and arts education to children who may never have had an opportunity to see a live theatrical performance.

4.       $960 - Web Camera:  This web camera promotes COS to potential students and business partners visiting the COS Web Page. Internet viewers can see an immediate “live video cast” of the campus with an up-to-the-minute view of the campus. This camera enables those who want to know about COS, an immediate and live view of COS.

 

FACULTY/STAFF EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR 2000-2001

The following faculty/staff grants were funded by the COS Foundation in 2000-2001:

1.        $1,000 - to Micki Sinclair, HIV / AID Coordinator, to support and enhance the College’s ability to work with students in the area of substance abuse within the COS Alcohol and Drug Education Program.  Funding will be held pending acceptance of a detailed budget clearly outlining fund usage.

2.        $1,000 - to Cheryl Keiner, Director of the Eisenhower Arts Program to provide COS Performing Art Series tickets to Siskiyou County K-12 grade students.  These tickets  often provide children an opportunity to see their first live theatrical performance.

3.        $850 - to Dr. Tania Volhontseff, Phi Theta Kappa Advisor, to fund the registration fees and air fare for two Phi Theta Kappa students to attend  and represent COS at the annual International PTK Convention.

4.        $675 - to Mike Read, Engineering and Physics Instructor, to purchase hardware and software to allow computerized data acquisition for physics experiments outside the classroom.  This grants funds the equipment and license for one complete workstation.

FACULTY/STAFF EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR 2001-2002

The following faculty/staff grants were funded by the COS Foundation in 2001-2002:

1.        $787 - to Jim Gilmore, Art Instructor to support the repair of the Art Department’s Seal Masterpiece 500T mounting press to enable art students to mount their artwork.

2         $1,000 – to Rod Koehler, Adjunct Tennis Instructor to purchase a Tennis Tutor Plus Ball Machine for the tennis program.  An additional $300 will be taken from the Foundation Tennis Reserve.  Mr. Koehler has annually donated to this fund with proceeds from annual summer tennis tournaments.

3.        $750 – to Dave Picanso, Residence Halls Supervisor to establish a gathering place for students.  The funds will be used to purchase kitchen items, a television set, a DVD player, speakers and various games.

4.        $500 – to Sharon Swingle, Coordinator the Women’s History Month Activities to support the Women’s History Month activities.

5.        $1,000 – to Teresa Winkelman, Registrar to support the purchase of a flat screen monitor to be placed in the lobby area of the Admissions and Records Office.  Student information will be put into PowerPoint presentations and run on the monitor to announce activities, events and academic deadlines. 

Performing Arts Series Partnership Grant:

1.        $2,500 - to Ron Hoopes, Music Instructor as a Partnership Grant, with funding coming from the COS Performing Art Series, to partner with the Music Department to provide musical outreach services to COS students, high school students and Community.  

FACULTY / STAFF EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR 2002 - 2003

The following faculty/staff grants were funded by the COS Foundation in 2002-2003:

1.        $200 awarded to the Residence Halls for the purchase of microwave popcorn to be made available free of charge to students residing in the             residence halls.  Funding will support the furthering of the Gathering Place for Residence Hall students and will help to keep more students on campus participating in the various evening activities sponsored by the College. 

2.        $300 awarded to Phi Theta Kappa to support research for the feasibility study of purchasing a Disc Golf Course for the COS Campus.  If a Disc Golf course were to be set up on the Weed Campus, the College and Community would benefit from this new recreational activity.  Funds will be used to put together a convincing professional presentation which will be made to the Board of Trustees at the January 2003 Board Meeting.  (

3.        $700 awarded to the Theatre Department to support the conversion of Theatre 4 classroom into a studio theatre for student performances.  The classroom will also be used as a venue for small theatre and music events, and will also serve as a useful rehearsal space during times with the main theatre is occupied.

4.        $729 awarded to Critical Skills/Library to support the purchase of a Philips DVD Recorder for transferring AV multi-media onto DVD discs.  The Library has numerous audio-visual items that need to be preserved and put into a digital format for student availability using modern equipment.  The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) has smaller short-term projects that would help instructors incorporate older media in a newer digital format.  The TLC will provide two training sessions during Spring 2003; one to faculty who want to incorporated DVD technology into their classrooms, and one to staff interested in utilizing DVD for COS related projects.

5.        $1,000 awarded to the Associated Student Body to support the renovation of the COS Gym concession stand by replacing the flooring, the painting of walls, installation of new shelving, and the purchase of a new refrigerator and microwave oven.  The condition of the concession stand is extremely poor and unsanitary.  Having a functional, sanitary place to sell food is vital to the success of a fundraising endeavor.  Primarily the Associated Student Body uses the Concession stand during home athletic games, but also by the Foundation for the annual Craft Fair, and other miscellaneous activities.  ( 

6.        $1,000 awarded to the Communications Department to support a monthly broadcast on MC-15 for the purpose of marketing and recruitment of COS College/Foundation events and activities, athletic games, and classes/workshops.  The program will be dedicated to providing “hands-on” student training, campus wide marketing assistance and community networking.  A total of eight shows will be produced beginning in October 2002 and ending May 2003. 

7.        $1,000 awarded to the Athletic Department to support the first-ever COS Athletic Hall of Fame / Siskiyou County Athlete of the Year awards banquet scheduled for May 17, 2003 at the Miner’s Inn Convention Center in Yreka, CA.  The objective is to increase community involvement and help recognize outstanding athletes (both past and present).  A committee will select ten former COS student athletes and twenty-eight high school athletes will be honored at the banquet with one male and female athlete chosen as Siskiyou County Athlete of the Year.  

 

FACULTY / STAFF EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR 2003 - 2004

The following faculty/staff grants were funded by the COS Foundation in 2003-2004:

1.        $724 awarded to the Music Department for the purchase of five microphones for use by the Vocal Jazz Ensemble.  The microphones will be used by members of the class during performances and will enable the program to expand the number of participants from 18 to 23 per year. 

2.        $1000 awarded to Phi Theta Kappa to support the purchase of equipment and construction of a Disc Golf Course located on the Weed Campus.

3.        $300 awarded to Geology Department for the purchase of software to be used for sampling weather station data and posting to the internet, as well as the installation of display cabinet and cabling for power of the equipment to be housed in the Life Science Building. 

4.        $820 awarded to the Communications Department to support a monthly broadcast on MC-15 for the purpose of marketing and recruitment of COS College/Foundation events and activities, athletic games, and classes/workshops.  The program will be dedicated to providing “hands-on” student training, campus wide marketing assistance and community networking.  A total of eight shows will be produced beginning in October 2003 and ending May 2004.

5.        $500 awarded to the Athletic Department to support the purchase of a display case to house pictures and plaques of Hall of Fame inductees.  Grant to also cover cost of pictures, frames and engraved plaque.  The Foundation challenges the Athletic Club and Quarterback Club to help offset the costs by supporting the Hall of Fame by awarding the same amount.

6.        $575 awarded to the Art Department to support the purchase of 5 Tiltall STO1 Tripods to be used by Photography students who are working on class projects.

7.        $1000 awarded to the residence halls for the purchase of furniture to be used in a room designated for guests or as a student lounge.  This space will be used as a student lounge and will be checked out to students through the Residence Hall Director on duty and will also serve multiple functions.  The space may also be used as a space for overnight guests such as parents or campus visitors with a small fee charged to cover any cleaning or repair costs.

8.        Tickets for Performing Arts Series & Music and Drama Performances – awarded to the Intercultural Club.  Once ticket will be made available for each of the students who are club members.

FACULTY / STAFF EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR 2004 - 2005

The following faculty/staff grants were funded by the COS Foundation in 2004-2005:

1.        $912 awarded to the Music Department for the purchase of clothing for use  by the Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

2.        $1000 awarded to the Library for four Library Reading Chairs.

3.        $1000 awarded to Athletic Department for support of the Hall of Fame banquet.

4.        $500 awarded to the Communications Department for the purchase of  Vegas Video Software and an external portable hard drive for the production of  eight cable cast  shows beginning in October 2004 and ending May 2005.

5.        $625 awarded to the Critical Skills Lab for the purchase of 250 mouse pads.

6.        $963 awarded to the Residence Halls for the purchase of an electric fire used in the living rooms of the Residence Halls  fireplaces. 

FACULTY / STAFF EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR 2005 - 2006

The following faculty/staff grants were funded by the COS Foundation in 2005-2006:

1. $1000 awarded to the Welcome Center / Counseling Services for the improvement of the Student Center. This award will provide funding to purchase new reading chairs and reading lamps in the Student Center.

2. $1000 awarded to the Theater Department for the purchase of new chairs used for audience seating in the James Witherell Studio Theater.

3. $1000 awarded to Discovery Childcare Center for the purchase of a changing table, outside play structure and developmentally appropriate materials of the Toddler Program.

4. $800 awarded to the Art Department for the purchase of a new film drier to be used by the Photography Program.

5. $679 awarded to the Student Housing Department to fund travel expenses for Residence Hall Students to attend the Pacific Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls Conference.

6. $500 awarded to the Library for the purchase of display panels for exhibits.

FACULTY / STAFF EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR 2006-2007

The following faculty/staff grants were funded by the COS Foundation in 2005-2006:

1. $1000 awarded to the Mt. Shasta International Film Festival to support the purchase of tickets for COS students to be able to attend the film series.

2. $1000 awarded to the COS staff and faculty for the improvement of the Staff and Faculty Lounge. This award will provide funding to improve the ambience of the Staff and Faculty Lounge by providing reading lamps, comfortable chairs, and round dining tables with chairs, book case, and new microwave.

3. $1000 awarded to the English Department to support collaborative efforts between the Mt. Shasta Writers Series and COS. Funds will be used to support educational activities for students that will bring nationally acclaimed poets and writers to COS in the form of classroom visits, formal readings, and a summer poetry festival.

4. $660 awarded to the Theater Department for the purchase of four rapiers (swords) for use by the Theater Department for use as props in student productions that requires stage combat as well the Stage Movement classes.

5. $600 awarded to the Music Department to support printing costs for the COS Concert Choir program to be distributed to the public while on their summer concert tour to Scotland and Ireland.

6. $596 awarded to the Early Childhood Education Program to support the purchase of an outdoor play structure for the children who attend the Discovery Child Development Center on the Weed Campus.


FACULTY / STAFF EDUCATIONAL GRANTS FOR 2007-2008

 

 $1,000 awarded to the Theater Department to fund the replacement of four black duvatene curtain legs (or masking curtains) for the Stage.  As the only large performance venue in Siskiyou County, the Theater is not only used by most programs on campus, but also by visiting artists in the Performing Arts Series, as well as countless other community organizations.  (Proposal submitted by Sharon Swingle on behalf of the Theater Department)

$1,000 awarded to the Maintenance Department to provide a one-third matching grant for the purpose of constructing a “Cold Frame” greenhouse on the grounds of the COS greenhouse facility to facilitate the low-cost growth of plantings and plant materials used in the ongoing beautification process of both the Weed and Yreka campuses.  This structure will allow the staff to make better use of the existing heated greenhouse space, and allow enough physical space to grow the required amount of plants at the same time.   (Proposal submitted by Randy Joslin  on behalf of the Maintenance Department)

$824 awarded to the COS Community Children’s Choir for the purchase of T-shirts to be worn by children participating in the choir during performances.  This is a new program at COS this year and currently 40 students are enrolled in the program. (Proposal submitted by Carol Taforo, Director of the COS Community Children’s Choir)

$1,000awarded to Phi Theta Kappa to fund membership fees for students who are not able to afford the $65 PTK membership application fee.  PTK is one of the most active student organizations on campus.  They coordinate and host the Annual Halloween Costume Contest (which aired on MCTV-15 last year), collect recycled bottles and cans on campus, volunteer at the Humane Society in Mt. Shasta, hold bake sales during the Christmas and Valentines Day holidays, and collaborate with other student organizations on campus such as ASB.  (Proposal submitted by Heidi English, PTK Advisor)

$1,000 awarded to the COS Music Department – Community Band Program, for the commission of a four-movement work representing significant features of the area around College of the Siskiyous and Siskiyou County as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the College of the Siskiyous.  The music will be performed by the COS Community Band at the December 7 and 10 concerts.     (Proposal submitted by Sean Abel, Band Instructor)
