Recycling

What can you do?

Paper:
Virtually all paper that comes through COS can be recycled, except for items that have touched food, petroleum, or body fluids (paper towels, tissues, etc.). Hint: When you empty your paperwork from your campus mailbox, be sure to place all unwanted papers in the recycle container under the counter instead of throwing it in the garbage.
Confidential papers can be placed in one of three shredding collection bins (Admissions, Business Office, Print Shop). Once a month, contents of those bins are commercially shredded and the end product is eventually recycled.
When you make copies, duplex as much as possible to cut paper use in half.
Publish minutes, agendas, handbooks, and forms online to cut down the amount of printing. Items then become print-as-needed.
Use e-mail for correspondence and save elctronically rather than printing every piece.

We have distributed blue desk-side reycle containers that can be used for collecting your papers. When your container is full, we ask that you empty it into the larger collection container located in your building. Maintenance staff will empty the large containers weekly (usually on Fridays). Individuals in most building have "adopted" the large collection containers, and they accept responsibility for e-mailing the group "Recycling" when those containers are starting to fill up.

Beverage containers:
There are beverage collection containers located through campus where you can drop off your drink containers. They can all be mixed together. Many of the containers look like large blue soda cans with the recycle logo on the side. Currently Life Science, LRC, Theater, Gym Lobby, Student Center inside and outside, Mc Cloud Hall, Lodges, and TTC have containers. Other buildings and offices may have made their own.

Recycle:
To assist Maintenace and also to take up less room, break down your cardboard products for pickup. If it is just a box or two, you should be able to leave it next to your garbage or recycle container. If you have a large amount, it would be helpful to let Maintenance know that you will be producing more than usual so someone can pick it up.

Toner Cartridges:
Many of our laser printers on campus have cartridges that can be recharged or recycled. They often come with return labels. Follow the shipping instructions to return items. If you are not sure on your particular item, you should be able to call the manufacturer for more information. When your laser printer cartridge is empty, exchange it at Tech Services for a new one, and they will ship back the used one.

College of the Siskiyous commits to the three R's - Reducing, Reusing, Recycling

In addition to the above, we:

Reuse by:

  • Purchase recycled products whenever possible
  • Book buybacks
  • Offer surplus for sales and donations

Reycle:

  • Oil or tallow (Cafeteria)
  • Metal
  • Grasscycling
  • Chip/mulch/compost wood waste and firewood sales from selective thinning
  • Waste oil, batteries

The new building construction on the Weed and Yreka campuses are constructed with sustainability and LEED certification in mind.

Many thanks to the COS Foundation for awarding the recycling program a grant for fall 2008. We were able to purchase deskside containers and large collection cans for the buildings for our paper collections.
